Abstract:
This study examines the impact of French studies on nation building in Nigeria, a multilingual nation where language plays a crucial role in fostering unity and development. French, as Nigeria’s second official foreign language, holds strategic importance due to the country’s geographical location in a Francophone-dominated region. The study explores how French language education contributes to socio-
economic development, cultural integration, and regional diplomacy, addressing its relevance in national and international contexts. The primary objective of the research is to evaluate the role of French studies in strengthening Nigeria’s capacity for regional cooperation, enhancing cultural exchange, and promoting economic growth. It also investigates the challenges hindering the effective implementation of French studies in Nigerian educational institutions. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. Surveys and interviews were conducted with educators, policymakers, and students, while secondary data were analyzed from relevant policy documents and academic literature. Findings reveal that French studies play a significant role in Nigeria’s regional integration through bodies like ECOWAS, facilitating diplomatic relations and trade. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited resources, and societal attitudes toward French education undermine its potential. The study concludes by recommending strategic policy reforms to strengthen French studies as a tool for nation building in Nigeria.
